At Redbird, we believe in celebrating the full range of human experience – and that includes how our brains work. In this blogpost, we explore the concept of neurodiversity, how it shows up in everyday life, and why creating inclusive, neuro-affirming spaces matters.
What Is Neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity refers to the natural variations in the way human brains function and make sense of the world around us. It’s a term that honors the idea that there’s no single “normal” way to think, feel, sense, and interact with the world. This includes experiences often associated with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and other forms of cognitive variation. Whether someone thinks in patterns, or needs extra time to focus in a quiet space – these are all just different, equally valid ways of being in the world.
What is Masking?
Masking refers to the process of hiding or suppressing one’s neurodivergent traits in order to conform to social expectations. This can mean mimicking “typical” behavior, avoiding stimming (self-regulatory actions like tapping or fidgeting), or pushing through overwhelming environments.
Over time, masking can lead to emotional exhaustion, loss of identity, and serious mental health challenges. Statistics clearly indicate that neurodivergent individuals face higher rates of depression, anxiety, and burnout – often linked to years of being misunderstood or unsupported. Many grow up up hearing recurring messages of “not trying hard enough” or “being too much” which can also take a significant toll on one’s self-esteem and lead to chronic stress.
How Does Redbird Offer Neuro-Affirming Care?
At Redbird, we prioritise offering neuro-affirming care. This means that our clinicians respect your unique experiences and communication styles. They work collaboratively with you to find what feels helpful and supportive to you while avoiding pathologizing traits that are simply different.
We focus on creating a space where you don’t have to mask or explain your worth by focusing on flexibility, relationship-building, and meeting you exactly where you are.
If you or someone you love is looking for a therapist who truly understands and supports neurodiversity, we’re here to help. Reach out to schedule an initial consultation with one of our skilled, neuro-affirming associates.
